The Pied Piper Junior Aquathlon
On Saturday 9th July Sandford Parks Lido in Cheltenham hosted the second Pied Piper Junior Aquathlon. This fun, multi-discipline sporting event consisted of a swim followed by a run providing an excellent introduction into the sport of triathlon.
The competitors aged from 8 to 16 years raced in distances ranging from a 54 to 400-metre swim followed by a 400 metre – 3.1km run around Sandford Park. With roughly 90 competitors of varying ages the Sandford Parks Lido team did a fantastic job of making sure the day ran smoothly, and along with the fine weather the event was a huge success. We look forward to planning for next year!
Gloucestershire Motor Show 2011

The events second year in aid of The Pied Piper Appeal and Cruse Bereavement Care offered a full fun day out for all the family. The beautiful surroundings of Highnam Court played host to cars from across the generations as well as circus skills, dance displays, a driving simulator and refreshments.

190 miles for sick children
Kevin Boughtwood and his partner Pat Gun, both from Tewkesbury, recently visited the Children’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital to celebrate raising £500 for The Pied Piper Appeal.
The money raised will be spent specifically in the Emily Kent Ward, which is the Oncology Unit in the Children’s Centre, on toys and equipment that will directly help improve the environment for children needing to stay in this facility.
Due to the nature of the illnesses that the children using this unit have, the unit is totally self-contained with its own playroom, toys, parent’s room and adolescent’s day room. It will make a huge difference to those children who regularly are admitted to the Unit to have a new selection of toys and video games.
Kevin walked solo 190 miles in just 13 days with a full backpack (20kg) along the Offa’s Dyke, from Prestatyn in North Wales, all the way to Chepstow in South Wales. During his incredible challenge, Pat supported Kevin by managing the administration, providing transport to the start and from the finish and bringing him fresh kit and supplies half way through the walk, returning to Wales again on the last day to complete the final leg of 17.5 miles with him.
Kevin tells us the best part of the walk was completing the challenge, 2 weeks of "back to basics" and being in close proximity to nature all for a very worthy cause. The worst part he says was the third day of the walk, the equivalent of a marathon runner's "wall".
Secret Village for sick children
On Wednesday 23rd March the Children’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and The Pied Piper Appeal officially opened the new outdoor play area and celebrated with tea and cake, kindly donated by Jane‘s Pantry.
Katherine Garner from Sun Life Financial of Canada cut the ribbon, alongside Mr Roger Head, DL, Chairman of The Pied Piper Appeal, to open the play area which has been built by a Norfolk firm Flights of Fantasy.
Over the past 2 years The Pied Piper Appeal has been working with staff from the Children’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital to create an outdoor play area for those children who are staying on the ward.

The dream is now a reality thanks to a generous donation from Sun Life Financial of Canada, based in Barnwood, who helped The Pied Piper Appeal provide a secret village in the middle of the inpatients wards. The beautifully designed and hand painted, child size village includes a church, Cotswold style houses and even a village pond complete with water lilies.
The Chairman of The Pied Piper Appeal, Mr Roger Head, DL thanked everyone who have helped make this dream a reality including Nigel Hawkins from Astam, Jane’s Pantry for the beautiful celebration cakes, Sun Life Financial of Canada and everyone who has supported The Pied Piper Appeal.

Brunsdon LLP to transform children's bathroom
Based in Gloucester, Brunsdon LLP, insurance and financial advisers, are keen to help the local community. Throughout 2011 this local company will be fundraising to help The Pied Piper Appeal transform the children's bathroom in the Children's Centre, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital into a much more user friendly and practical area.
The bathroom needs extra equipment so it can be used to maximum effect, as well as decoration to brighten the room up for the children. This project will cost in the region of £10,000, but will make a huge difference for sick children in hospital.
